The Virginia Company has provided three ships for your expedition to Virginia: Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. These ships are built to carry cargo--- not passengers. There will be very little room for you to move about. Most likely you will share a small berth with 2 or 3 others, taking turns to sleep. In good weather you can sleep up on deck. In bad weather everyone will stay below decks. It will be smelly and and you will probably be seasick. At least one of your fellow passengers will die before reaching Virginia. Fire is a terrible danger on wooden ships. In bad weather you will not be able to cook or even light a lantern. Your food may go bad (rotten), but it will be all you have until you reach the Canary Islands and can re-supply. All three ships will travel together for safety. While aboard the Captain will be in charge. You and the other passengers are expected to stay out of the way of the crew. Boredom will be a major problem. Take care that your lack of activity does not lead to disagreement and conflict with your fellow Adventurers. |
